Bauxite-laden truck goes off the road at Gulem

Canacona: A truck, carrying bauxite ore from Vasco, veered off the road and crashed into a roadside tree at Gulem on Friday morning.

According to sources, the truck was transporting bauxite ore from Vasco to Karnataka when, upon reaching Gulem, it went out of control and rammed into a tree.  The driver of the truck escaped unhurt, however, the front portion of the truck was damaged in the mishap.

Quality of the roads has a huge impact on safety while commuting and such accidents are a regular sight on the NH66 from Balli to Poinguinnim. This stretch of highway is uneven and narrow with improper road banking at turns, resulting in accidents, stated Anil Bhagat.

Locals claimed that they have not seen any changes in the road design for the safety of the public except for some crash barriers at Karmalghat.

With frequent mishaps along the Balli-Polem highway, citizens have been regularly demanding that the authorities should conduct a study of the highway stretch and take measures to curb accidents.
