New entrants Churchill Brothers managed to register a hard-fought 1-0 win over Goa Velha in the inaugural match of the GFA Vendanta Women’s League 2018-19, organised by GFA and played under floodlights here on Thursday.
The Churchill Brothers eves dominated the first session and even came close to opening their account in the 14th minute, but Lifa Tavares’s placement went just past the side post.
However in the 20th minute Lifa made amends to her earlier missed effort and scored with a neat header where a lob shot from Michel Castanha’s rebounded off the post, 1-0.
On crossing over, Goa Velha eves showed complete dominance over the proceedings but they somehow failed to find the equaliser.
In the 53rd minute, Goa Velha striker Ansiva Vas’s goal-bound shot was blocked by Churchill defender Laura Estibeiro while in the next few minutes three of her strikes were brilliantly saved by Churchill keeper Rima Gadekar.
In the closing stages of the match, Churchill defender Laura came with a timely clearance before Goa Velha’s Divya
Tuyenkar could aim at the goal.
Goa Velha’s Ansiva was adjudged women of the match for her good performance.
