City mayor Uday Madkaikar along with ruling councillors on Thursday gheraoed the commissioner of the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) Shashank Tripathy after the latter withdrew workers from four different areas and shifted them to some other spots, disrupting the desilting and cleaning work.

The mayor asked the commissioner not to take such abrupt decision since monsoon was just days away and the monsoon-related work needed to be completed in time.

The Mayor alleged that supervisors were also transferred from one section to other sections without his knowledge.

Earlier, in the morning, the mayor stopped Smart City project-related digging work

which was going on near the Bal Bhavan as the work was being carried out even after the deadline for completion of digging work had ended on April 30.

“I had personally asked the IPSCDL (Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd) about their plans and the length of the road cutting and digging, but till date the firm failed to provide any plan,” Madkaikar claimed.

Addressing the media, the agitated mayor alleged that the Collector granted IPSCDL permission to continue with the digging work without taking him into confidence.

He said in case of waterlogging during monsoon, he and councillors should not be held responsible for it and pointed out that city residents keep complaining about road digging work, dust pollution, uncovered trenches and road closures.

He said that 30,000 people have elected the councillors and they have to face the wrath of the people when waterlogging occurs during
rains.

Meanwhile, the commissioner Tripathy assured the mayor and the councillors that by May 15 all the works would be completed. CCP is preparing and planning ward-wise work of cleaning and desilting of gutters and if any councillor has any work, they can approach him with the proposal, Tripathy said.

While replying to a query that if any work was not completed within the permitted time, the commissioner said action would be taken against any firm violating the CCP norms.
