It was a hard fought 1-0 win that Curtorim Gymkhana held on to as they pipped Dempo SC juniors in the GFA First Division League match played at panchayat ground, Raia on Wednesday. The solitary goal was scored by Curtorim’s Roque Borges in the 19th minute.

The all important goal which helped Curtorim Gymkhana snatch full points, despite Dempo’s complete domination in the second session came off following a defensive lapse as Curtorim Gymkhana defender utilised the opportunity to tap the ball in gently off a flag kick.

It was Curtorim medio Cliff Barreto’s flag kick which stranded the rival defence, including the keeper and the impressive Roque Borges who positioned himself well as he tapped the ball in.

For the first fifteen minutes of play, Curtorim Gymkhana had an upper hand as they unsettled the Dempo defence with some dangerous forays with their medio Cliff Barreto sending some defence splitting passes but somehow the Dempo SC defence managed to quell the moves with some timely clearances.

The match thereafter was played on level terms with striker Rajat Harijan trying his best to get past the strong Curtorim defence ably marshalled by Roque Borges and company.

Earlier Rajat was seen sending a scorching shot which just missed the mark narrowly before the Dempo team went into the
arrears.

As the match progressed attacking medio Altroy Rodrigues and striker Cletus Pinto combined well and threatened the rival defence often, but they just could’nt find the mark.

Rajat Harijan in particular had three smart tries to beat the Curtorim keeper Johnson Bhagat who stood his ground well by proving to be a safe pair of hands.

On another occasion Cletus Pinto sent a good shot, which was smartly collected by the Curtorim keeper.

Dempo kept pressing hard and kept the rival defence on tanter hooks with their swift passes and positional play. Everytime they came deep inside the rival box, what they lacked was the imagination and right anticipation to slot it in. Even though, the team did so on some occasions, either the Curtorim defence managed to keep the ball away or their keeper rose to the occasion to bring some good
saves.

Such was the dominance of Dempo’s in the second session that a goal in their favour looked imminent. They had at least five clear chances to level the score in the second session but it was poor finishing that let the team down.

On one occasion, Dempo defender Nikhil Gurung’s smart try hit the cross bar and came back into play. Substitute Sachin Gawas too had a clear chance who failed to find the mark off a neat pass from Darrel Macarenhas.
