Panaji: The Goa 2019-20 season is set to kick start from August 1 with Dempo Sports Club and Goan FC playing the Charity match in Duler stadium at 4 pm, the teams were informed during the Managers meeting of Goa Professional League (GPL) clubs at GFA office in Panaji on Tuesday.
Churchill Brothers SC will play the first match of the Goa Professional League on August 22 at Duler stadium and 2019 runners-up Dempo Sports Club play promoted Sesa FA on August 24, according to the tentative draw released by GFA to the clubs.
GPL 2018-19 champions Goan FC begin their campaign on August 26 with a match against Panjim Footballers.
The GFA intends to take a break after the second round which will conclude on September 1. The break is to prepare players selected for the West Zone qualification round of the Santosh Trophy.
“The Competition committee wanted to introduce the system of having one leg and dividing the second between the top five teams and the bottom five teams to determine the winners and the team to be relegated. We were informed that this new format would help the league get over fast. However, many clubs pointed out that it would not benefit clubs to finish the league early as contracts of most players end in May,” an individual representing a club told The Navhind Times on condition of anonymity.
“Most clubs preferred the old home and away format and the Competition committee accepted it,” added another member, who attended the meeting.
Some clubs, according to sources, objected to the Central Registration System (CRS) being adopted by GFA this season. “The CRS system does not suit Goa because of the system adopted here. Take for example a player playing for a junior team of Panjim Footballers will not be able to play for Sporting Clube seniors as has been done before,” explained a member present during the meeting.
However, the meeting could not reach any conclusive decision on the subject.
Apart from a break for Santosh Trophy preparation, there will be another break for the league when preparations for the National Games begin. Goa is set to host the National Games from November 1 to 16.
Vasco SC, keeping in mind the number of sponsors, raised the issue whether they would be allowed the use of hoardings during their games. “We were informed that GFA is still unable to find a sponsor for the Professional League. GFA is trying to rope in FC Goa and a meeting is expected with the officials on Wednesday. A decision whether teams will be able to allot space to their sponsors was not taken,” stated another member
All teams will need to bear the cost of hosting their home matches. The cost centres around payments for an ambulance with defibrillator and doctor, ground boys, stretcher boys etc.
