DULER: Dempo Sports Club brought down the curtains on the eight month long Goa professional league, organised by the Goa Football Association (GFA), with a convincing 2-0 win over Churchill Brothers SC at Duler stadium on Sunday.
Mario Mascarenhas (17th min) and Jaison Vaz (84th min) took the total number of Goals scored in this edition of the league to 418.
The win did not change Dempo Sports Club or Churchill Brothers standing as both finished second and seventh respectively. Dempo finished with 48 points while Churchill Brothers finished with 26 points. Sporting Clube de Goa were crowned champions while Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim are relegated.
The league ended with a familiar sequence of three spectators who paid their way in, some reserve players of both teams and some senior citizens.
As the match was inconsequential to both, the coaches rested many players in their starting XI.
For Dempo SC, coach Samir Naik rested Beevan D’Mello, Kapil Hoble, Joaquim Abranches, Mathew Gonsalves, keeper Agnelo Gomes, Shallum Pires, Velito D’Cruz and Nickson Castanha while at the other end Churchill Brothers, Alfred Fernandes started without Nigerian Francis Onayema, keeper Ricardo Cardozo, Banpynkhrawnam and Israil Gurung.
Without the high profile players play was mostly restricted to midfield.
The Golden Eagles struck a goal in each session of play through Mario Mascarenhas (17th min) and Jaison Vaz (84th min).
In the 17th minute, Gaurish Naik was the first to have a crack at the Churchill goal but keeper James Kithan managed to fist the ball for a corner.
From the resultant corner by Latesh Mandrekar, Mario Mascarenhas tapped the ball into the goal.
In the 25th minute, Gaurish Naik sent a through pass to Suraj Hadkonkar whose goal bound shot was blocked by keeper James.
Goalkeeper James came to his teams rescue, five minutes before the breather by making back to saves and thus denying Latesh and Desmon a chance to add their names to the scorers list.
On crossing ends, in the 58th minute, U-20 Vinit Bugde moved from the left flank and latched a strike from an acute angle which was blocked by Churchill keeper James and the ball travelled to unmarked Suraj who blasted wide.
With play being restricted to midfield for the rest 25 minutes, finally in the 84th minute, substitute Beevan D’Mello sent a through pass to Jaison Vaz who dribbled past a defender and scored with a neat placement, 2-0.
