Fish imports back on track

Ending the prolong stalemate over fishing business, at least ten trucks carrying imported fish entered the wholesale fish market in Margao early Thursday morning giving a sigh of relief to fish traders.

However, at least 20 tonne of the imported fish sold was not checked as FDA officials were not seen at the market to test the fish.

Exuding happiness over the resumption of fish imports, Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association president Ibrahim Maulana said, “We have resumed fish imports on Thursday. The fish from Maharashtra and Karnataka has been brought into Goa in insulated vehicles. Although all fish traders did not get the imported fish, but business will be on the right track very soon.”

He maintained that the fish sold at the wholesale market is safe as fish traders have all the valid licences from the food and drug administration of their respective states.

Confirming that there were no FDA officials at the market to check the newly-arrived fish from the neighbouring states, Maulana opined that    FDA personnel should check the fish at markets and not at the border check-posts.

This reporter visited the wholesale market, which was awash with imported fish including sole fish, sardines and even kingfish.

Sources claimed that the fish was transported in vehicles which were kept to right temperatures and there was proper icing of the fish.

However, some of the vehicles do not have the mechanism to control the temperatures.

Member secretary of the South Goa Planning and Development   Authority Ashok Kumar clarified that no SGPDA member visited the wholesale market on the resumption of the fish imports.

The fish traders were asked to wind up the fish selling by 9 am.

Interestingly, the fish transporting vehicles were not seen after 9 am at the wholesale market unlike in the past when the trucks used to be parked at the market and along the road to the market.
