Goan Warriors march into Cana Benaulim Soccer final

Benaulim: Goan Warriors FC Tivim entered the finals of 43rd Cana Benaulim Soccer Tournament defeating Sai Avatar, Anjuna 7-5 via tie breaker, at St John, the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Tuesday.

The teams played a 2-2 draw during the regulation time.

It was the Sai Avatar team from Anjuna that impressed a great deal in the first session during which time the team sat pretty well leading by two goals.

However, the team lost its concentration in the second half and allowed Goan Warriors make a comeback as they managed to level the score after stitching some good moves.

Sai Avatar went into the lead through a goal scored by Nitish Salgaocar as he moved down the right flank and on receiving a through ball slammed it to the far corner of the Goan Warriors nets.

Sai Avatar continued with their good play and buttressed the lead in the 16th minute when Agnelo D’Souza dashed into the box and sent an angular effort to score a great goal.

Goan Warriors thereafter came up with some dangerous forays but the Anjuna keeper Soma Khorgaokar proved to be a good pair of hands; the defenders also stood firm all along.

The second session however saw Sai Avatar crack under pressure as the determined Goan Warriors began harassing the rival defence time and often.

Goan Warriors pulled a goal back in the 34th minute when Vishal’s powerful shot hit Sai Avatar defender Akash Dabolker and crashed in. They soon levelled the score in the 46th minute through Chetan Shirodkar, whose try completely deceived Sai Avatar keeper.

As the teams were involved in a dead-lock, the tie breaker system had to be adopted to decide the winners wherein Goan Warriors FC proved to be the better shooters.

Goan Warriors FC will take on UC Nerul in the final scheduled on June 30.
