The government, on Thursday, informed the State Legislative Assembly that the ammonia tank of the Zuari Agro Chemical, which forms a part of the factory’s expansion plan, would be constructed outside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) area, within the boundaries of the factory.
The Minister for Environment, Nilesh Cabral, who came out with this information said that the factory has directly and indirectly employed over 1,500 people, and should be given permission to upgrade its technology, as the existing technology of the factory, which was set up in 1973, has become outdated.
The proposed expansion of the urea plant of ZAC at Sancoale, which involves increase in capacity from 1,500 tonne production per day to 1,800 tonne production per day, includes installation of ammonia storage, gas turbine of 25 mW and heat recovery steam generator.
Earlier, the Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco informed the House that the 5,000 litres ammonia tank of the factory is proposed to be constructed within the CRZ of 0 mts-500 metres.
He also added the environmental impact assessment report for the said proposal of the factory, clearly maintains that the proposal is about expansion of the factory and not about its upgradation.
