The autobiography of late Konkani novelist, Bonaventure D’Pietro, titled ‘Vatliechea Avazan’ was released on his 80th birthday on July 14, 2019 at the Multipurpose Hall, Art & Culture Department by RDA minister, Michael Lobo.
Also present on the dais with the chief guest were the guest of honour and ex DKA president, Premanand Lotlikar; wife of late Bonaventure, Olinda Fernandes; DKA president, Tomazinho Cardozo; secretary Vincy Quadros; and treasurer Celso Fernandes. The book was published under DKA’s ‘Jivit Kotha Porgottni Yeuzonn – Autobiography / Life Story Scheme’.
In his address, Lotlikar urged Lobo to work towards granting official status to Roman script in the Official Language Act and sought to protest against Sahitya Academy for not taking cognisance of famed writers as Bonaventure.
Responding to the granting of official status to Roman script, Lobo stated that a detailed discussion on this should be conducted. He further said that there is a need for ‘unsung heroes’ like Bonaventure to be made famous by ensuring their writings and their life history reaches the homes of the people. In this respect, he assured his one-month salary to DKA and asked the Academy to send 500 copies to deserving people across Goa.
While speaking on the specifics of the book, DKA president, Tomazinho also expressed his unhappiness over the Sahitya Academy’s failure to recognise Bonaventure’s works and announced that the ‘Book of the Year’ which DKA awards to the best Konkani writer every year will from this year be called ‘Bonaventure D’Pietro – Book of the Year Award’.
On the occasion, N Shivdas, Willy Goes, Fr Michael Rebello, Anthony Menezes Veronica Fernandes, Joao Cardozo and Fausto V da Costa praised Bonaventure for his work and love for Knkani. Goa’s famous cartoonist, Alexyz presented a ‘ghummot’ with the cartoon of Bonaventure on it to his wife, Olinda.
On behalf of the family, Bonaventure’s son, Raj expressed his sentiments and love for his father and Rabin through a power point presentation showed some milestones in his father’s life.
Brazinho Soares exhibited copies of each of Bonaventure’s books. On the occasion, a copy of the released book was presented to the prominent people who helped Bonaventure over the course of his life.
