Speaker Has To Be Impartial
May be the newly elected 17th Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla is a long-time associate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP President cum Home Minister Amit Shah, but one hope “the post of Speaker should not only be impartial but look impartial” as Birla said. Hope he must be respecting his own words. No one expects that Birla will become the replica of the country’s first Speaker ‘Father of the Lok Sabha’, Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, who was echoing the sentiments of the whole nation. Even then the Opposition stalwarts described him as the ‘sheet anchor of parliamentary democracy’ and as a ‘genuine custodian of the rights of the Opposition.’ Interestingly in this Modi era when by hook and crook BJP wants to prove his money and cunningness to grab the power as less as the Opposition. Just at that time one reminds the country’s second speaker Madabhooshi Ananthasayanam Ayyangar. At that time (1956-57 (interim) and 1957-62) there was no official Leader of the Opposition in the House, Ayyangar treated the stalwarts of the Opposition with the respect and regard due to them and always sought to ensure a balance between the Government and the Opposition.

Undeserved To Be
There is a saying “Rules are meant to be obeyed by fools and for the guidance of wise men”. This is obvious when we are on the road and neither vehicles or pedestrians follow any traffic rules. Also if you employ common sense or follow the rules when boarding a Ferry when both people and vehicles are embarking and disembarking simultaneously, you will be left back at the jetty! One would hope that our parliamentarians would set a good example especially at the start of their tenure when taking an oath to serve our country. And what do we see? Breaking of rules and decorum even whilst taking the oath! A sadvic will want to state her guru’s name along with hers. Others will shout Jai Sri Ram, Bharat Mata Ki Jai and Van Day Mataram. They will even not do it with reverence, but to taunt others who will retaliate with Allahu Akbar etc. Being in the brute majority showing some magnamity and humility would raise their stature like a Virat Kohli stopping crowd jeering of a rival player bringing praise world over! And now we have Yogi Adityanath bringing in an ordinance to penalize “Anti National Activity” without specifying exactly what is! Where is our nation heading? The trouble with the saying is who are the wise and who are the fools?
