The third edition of the International Centre of Goa’s Goa University Essay Competition ‘Ideas Unleashed’ 2018 was held at ICG, Dona Paula.

Chief guest at the function was Secretary of Education, Government of Goa, Nila Mohanan. In her address, she hailed the decision of the organisers for the encouraging initiative of having introduced Konkani language as a category in addition to the existing English category for the third edition of Ideas Unleashed. “Konkani is a very rich language but deserves more attention, and should be given its due importance so that it remains as vibrant as it is today,” she said.

The topic for the essay competition was ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): The Challenges for Goa’. The competition was open to students currently enrolled at Goa University and affiliated colleges such as the Goa Institute of Management (GIM); Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Goa; the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Goa. There were two categories: English and Konkani.

A total of 111 entries were received from 33 institutions. Head of department of English, Goa University, Kiran Budkuley screened the entries. The jury members comprised of journalist, Patricia Sethi; professor at department of English, Goa University, KS Bhat; guest faculty at department of English, Goa University, Isabel Santa Rita Vas and head of department of Konkani, Prakash Parienkar.

The chief guest presented the trophies to the top winners. The first place along with cash prize of `25,000 was won by Lynn Marie Dias of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa and Adriel Peter Almeida of Don Bosco College, Panaji in the English and Konkani categories respectively. The second place along with cash prize of `20,000 was won by Pratyay Zilu Shetye of National Institute of Technology, Goa and the third place along with cash prize of `15,000 was won by Sailee Kudchadkar of Goa Medical College, Bambolim.

Students whose entries were shortlisted were awarded consolation prizes of `500 each. The shortlisted candidates in the English category were Shara Naique (SS Dempo College of Commerce & Economics, Cujira); Bharavi Kharangate, Pawan Gorantla and Shania Braganza (MES College, Zuarinagar); Alvina Almeida (Carmel College for Women, Nuvem); Scarlett Dias and Adriana Natalia Fernandes (GR Kare College of Law, Margao). The shortlisted candidates in the Konkani category were Gayatri VS Kudchadkar (Goa College of Pharmacy, Panaji); Samruddhi Jai Naik (SS Dempo College of Commerce & Economics, Cujira) and Mrunal Desai (PES College of Pharmacy, Ponda). Also present at the occasion were vice chancellor of Goa University, Varun Sahni; president of ICG, Yatin Kakodkar and director of ICG, Pushkar P. Ideas Unleashed is supported by chairman of VM Salgaocar Institute of International Hospitality Education and vice president of the board of trustees at ICG, Dattaraj Salgaocar.
