UC Nerul move into semis

BENAULIM: United Club of Nerul entered the semifinals of 43rd Cana Benaulim soccer tournament, organised by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association, after Sanket J’s second half strike helped them beat Sporting Club of Davorlim by a solitary goal in the quarterfinals played at St John, the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Tuesday. The all-important goal for the winners came in the 50th minute when Lincoln Gonsalves sent a defence-splitting pass to Sanket J into the box from where the last named romped home with an angular effort giving no chance whatsoever to SC Davorlim keeper Venson Figueredo.

Curtorim Gymkhana down Ugem Rising Club

ASSOLDA: Curtorim Gymkhana defeated Ugem Rising Club 7-6 via tie-breaker to advance to quarterfinals of St Anthony’s Festival Cup football tournament, at Assolda panchayat grounds on Tuesday. The teams were involved in a 2-2 draw in the regulation time. In the tie-breaker, Curtorim Gymkhana proved to be better shooters.

Anurag, Nitish, Leon, Nandhini start off with win

TALEIGAO: Goa chess players GM Anurag Mhamal, FM Nitish Belurkar, Leon Mendonca and Nandhini Saripalli are on one point each at the end of Round 1 of the 2nd Goa International Grandmasters Chess Tournament, being held at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Taleigao, on Tuesday. In their respective encounters, Anurag (2497) defeated Jaeel Atharva (2098); Nitish (2353) defeated Bhat Jaipan (2001); Leon (2405) beat Md Abzid Rehman (2053) and Nandhini (1884) stunned IM Praveen Kumar (2223). Goa’s Devesh Naik (1841) was however held to a draw by Kushagra Mohan (2207).
