The directorate of food and drugs administration has recommended the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) not to issue permissions to vendors for carrying out the activity of ‘food preparation’ including stalls involved in preparing and selling ‘gobi manchurian’, unless arrangements are made to ensure the availability of adequate infrastructure, clean water and waste disposal facility are put in a right manner, during the ensuing Saptah fair in Vasco.

In a letter to MMC chief officer Gaurish Shankwalkar, the director of food and drugs administration and commissioner food safety Goa Jyoti Sardesai has said that there are apprehensions over the quality of food items sold by ‘gobi manchurian’ stalls which are operated during the period of the annual Saptah fair in Vasco.

“It has been observed that the food stalls allotment are made to the vendors by MMC to sell prepared food without ensuring the availability of adequate infrastructure for preparation of food under appropriate clean conditions, water facility, washing facility and also methodological waste disposal is not done, which results in non-compliance to the hygienic requirements under the Food Safety Act 2006 and could lead to a food hazard,” said Sardesai.

It is observed that stalls are being sublet to vendors who are unaware of the conditions laid down by the council to facilitate operations in a smoother manner.

“The FDA in the interest of public health strongly recommends that no permission should be issued to vendors for carrying out the activity of ‘food preparation’ including stalls involved in preparing and selling ‘gobi manchurian,’ unless arrangements are made to ensure the availability of adequate infrastructure, clean water and waste disposal facility are put in a right manner,” said Sardesai.

She however has sought the cooperation from MMC to serve quality and safety of food articles intended for general public consumption.
