One drowns at Hollant beach; 2 feared drowned in Khandepar river

A picnic turned tragic for three individuals in Goa, as the state witnessed a middle-aged man drowning and two youth feared drowned in separate incidents that occurred on Saturday.

In the first incident, a 51-year-old man from Headland-Sada in Vasco drowned at the Hollant beach in Cortalim on Saturday afternoon.

As per information from the Verna police, the deceased has been identified as Dilip Rane. He had gone for a picnic at the Hollant beach along with his friends and neighbours.

After having lunch in the afternoon, he ventured into the sea, despite being warned by lifeguards at the beach due to rough weather condition. He was fished out from the water in an unconscious state by his friends and lifeguards around 3.30 pm and shifted to the Sub District Hospital at Chicalim.

The doctors there, however, advised his friends and neighbours to refer him to the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital at Bambolim since he was in a critical condition. He was, however, pronounced dead on admission by doctors in the casualty at GMC.

The Verna police have registered a case of drowning. Police sub-inspector Raghoba Kamat is further investigating the case under the supervision of police inspector Uday Parab.

In another incident that occurred in Ponda, two youth from Vasco are feared drowned in the Khandepar river after they ventured into the river for a swim during a family outing near government agriculture farm at Codar.

The missing persons have been identified as Pravin Kumar and Rahul Suryvanshi, both aged 20 and residents of Shantinagar, Vasco.

According to Ponda police, one Suresh Kumar Pal along with his wife, two children, nephew (brother’s son) and two neighbouring youth had gone for a picnic near the government agriculture farm at Codar.

The group had ventured into the river for a swim when the incident occurred. The victims, Suresh Kumar Pal’s nephew Pravin Kumar and neighbour Rahul Suryavanshi, are yet to be traced.

According to onlookers, one of the youth initially started struggling in the water and the other youth tried to save him. Unfortunately, both are feared drowned. Even Suresh Kumar Pal attempted to save the youth.

Police said that the incident occurred around 10.30 am and soon after receiving a call from the locals, Ponda police and fire personnel rushed to the site. The search operation was on till late evening to trace the victims.
