Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda, Mount Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Chinchinim and St Mary’s High School, Varca advanced to the next round of matches of Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament under-17 for boys, as they defeated their respective opponents in the matches played at artificial turf grounds, Fatorda–Margao on Thursday.
In the first match, Our Lady of Rosary HS were made to wait till the tie-breaker by VRDA’s Gaunker Higher Secondary School, Raia before they finally emerged victorious.
Gaunkar HSS went into the lead in the 36th minute when their attacking medio Steward Costa ran past the strong rival defence and after entering the box let go a powerful shot that beat Our Lady of Rosary HS keeper Glen Faleiro hands down.
The match thereafter was played at a hot pace as both the teams vied for supremacy. Slowly but surely, Our Lady of Rosary High School built up some meticulous moves, one of which culminated into a goal in the 49th thus restoring the parity.
It was a neat pass from Jordan Borges, who moved up with the ball and after dodging three rival defenders, deftly passed the ball to a better-placed Bekham Dias, who without losing much time sent an angular shot that crashed to the far corner of Gaunkar HSS nets. After that the teams went all out for the kill as the ball rolled on from one end to the other.
Our Lady of Rosary HS who initiated good moves through Carl Fernandes and Prasad Shinde in the middle saw their team’s strikers missing the mark narrowly at least on two clear counts.
On one occasion, Our Lady of Rosary HS’s Shenoy Gaunkar saw his effort from the box miss the mark narrowly. On another occasion, they nearly scored through Yash Pawar but his shot whisked past the post and moved out.
Gaunkar HSS too had a few tries at the rival goal but most of their shots were off the mark.
Nelson Vaz, Sachin Rathod, Melwyn Da Costa, Craig Dias and Socoro Colaco were in full cry in the last few minutes of play for Gaunkar HSS, but they could not beat the Our Lady of Rosary HS keeper Glen Faleiro.
And just when the match was about to end, Our Lady of Rosary HS’s Bekham tried a long shot which was easily collected by Gaunkar HSS keeper Shivraj Sharma.
In the resulting tie-breaker, Our Lady of Rosary HS proved to be better shooters as they won the match 4-3.
In day’s second match, Mount Mary’s HSS, Chinchinim defeated Regina Martyrum HS, Assolna 2-1. Mount Mary’s HS scored through E Peres (12th minute) and J Gomes (32nd minute), while
Regina Martyrum pulled a goal back through Inscial in the 18th minute.
In the last match of the day, St Mary’s HS, Varca defeated Perpetual Succour Convent, Navelim 6-5 via tie breaker. The teams played a 1-1 draw during the regulation time in which Wilson Baa scored for St Mary’s while for Perpetual Succour Aden D’Sa found the mark.
