Saligao: The monitoring committee appointed by the High Court of Bombay at Goa to keep a check on the Saligao waste management facility has warned the plant not to accept garbage beyond its capacity.
The committee has threatened to file a contempt petition in court if the plant goes ahead and accepts waste beyond its capacity.
Villagers from Saligao and Pilerne have complained to the panchayat about garbage being transported to the plant in open trucks which inconveniences the road users. The villagers from Saligao, Calangute and Candolim are also complaining about stench from the plant pervading the air, as they claim that the plant is presently working beyond its capacity.
According to some villagers, the Saligao waste treatment plant is under political pressure to accept additional garbage apart from the waste from 27 villages for which the plant was constructed.
Mario Cordeiro from Saligao, who is one of the members of the monitoring committee, and secretary of the Saligao Civic and Consumer Cell, told this daily that the panel has been monitoring the functioning of the plant but of late it has been under pressure to accept additional garbage. He said that the government is not serious about constructing another plant, as no process is being undertaken.
He said that a meeting will be held on Tuesday at the Saligao plant wherein all members of the monitoring committee and management will sit across and try to find a solution to the problem. Sources said that the committee members will also meet the Chief Minister at the secretariat.
