Panaji: Gurunath Vernekar and Manisha Naik were elected unopposed as sarpanch and deputy sarpanch respectively of Penha de Franca panchayat on Friday. As per the newly-elected sarpanch, he wants to develop the village as per wishes of the locals and complete development works which are pending.
Addressing media persons, Vernekar said that at present garbage has become a vexing issue in the village and that tackling it will be his priority as a sarpanch. He said the panchayat will station bins for collection of garbage, thereby tackling the problem in the village.
He further said that the bins will be kept at two points and persons will also be posted between 7 to 10 am to collect garbage. He said that people from other areas are dumping garbage in the village under the garb of darkness.
“We will also make efforts to make the village plastic-free. Panch members will visit commercial establishments and houses to create awareness on it,” he said.
He also said that said the library, which is in a dilapidated condition, will be redeveloped with provisions for a section for reading newspapers, books, study room for students and a multi-purpose hall for functions, gram sabhas and meetings.
