RiddiSiddhi Bullions demands to reduce import duty on gold

MUMBAI: Import duty on gold, which is 10% should be brought down to 5% -6%, which would restrict import from unauthorised sector and in turn, provide a support to the local industry, said managing director of RiddiSiddhi Bullions Ltd (RSBL) and ex-president of Bombay Bullion Association Prithviraj Kothari. Despite huge resources, total production from domestic mines constitutes between 1-3 tonnes out of India’s estimated consumption of 1000 tonnes. With custom duty being 10%, gold import from unauthorised sectors leads to a difference of Rs 2,50,00 between international and domestic markets. If custom duty is 10%, 8% is weight and 1% is excise duty so approximately with a total of 12%, there is a difference of Rs 3,00,000.
