Panaji: The Goa cabinet on Friday approved ten per cent reservation to the economically weaker sections of the general category in education and government jobs as per amendment carried out to sub-section (2) of Section 1 of the Constitution Act by the central government.
Speaking to media after the cabinet meeting at the Secretariat, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the required legislative amendments by the state to implement the decision would be carried out in the forthcoming monsoon session of the state assembly.
“The government will be implementing 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections of general category in education and government jobs without disturbing the existing reservations for other backward class, scheduled tribes and scheduled caste, freedom fighters and physically handicapped,” he clarified.
Sawant said that a large number of population, whose annual income is up to Rs 8 lakh, will be benefitted from the decision in the state. He said that for the first time, the economically weaker sections of general category from Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities will get such kind of reservation.
Meanwhile, the state cabinet has given approval to the proposal transferring 4,000 square metres of land owned by the education department to Sanjay School at Cacora in Quepem taluka.
