The beats of India

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Goa in collaboration with Samraat Club, Margao is all set to present a Bharatanatyam dance duet recital by Shyamjith Kiran and Viraja under their Horizon Series programme, on June 30, 4:45 p.m. at Gomantak Vidya Niketan, Margao.

The duo will commence their recital with ‘Ganesh Stuti,’ an invocatory piece in praise of Lord Ganesha. The next piece in the recital, ‘Tejas’ will be a famous Marathi natyasangeet composed by Jeetendra Abhisheki from the drama ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusli’. ‘Tejonidhi Loh Gol’ will play around the concept of the sun depicting light and enlightenment and the lotus depicting spiritual awakening and beauty. It highlights the love tie between these two entities which are inseparable even though very distant. ‘Ashtapadi’ depicts Lord Krishna pining for His beloved Radha.  This piece is in the raga kalyani and set in adi taalam. It has been composed by Srikanth Gopalakrishnan. ‘Thilana’ is in the ragam garudadhwani and set in adi talam. It has been composed by Balamurali Krishna and choreographed by Shyamjith Kiran.

Viraja and Shyamjith have trained from the Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai. Both of them have previously been a part of the Kalakshetra Repertory Company taking up major roles and have also taught as part time faculty at their alma mater. They have had the rich experience of working with legends in their field like The Dhananjayans and Leela Samson. The duo has also been in trained in Kathakali under their guru Sadanam Balakrishnan.

Training in yoga and kalaripayattu has been an important factor in their understanding of not just the physicality of the human form but also the intellect. Some of their critically acclaimed works include, ‘Pareekshana’, ‘Mudivil Oru Aarambam, ‘Svam’, ‘Aham’, ‘Rekha’ and Eeram.

In addition to this recital, there will also be a performance by Maitrini, Prerna’s Samanvay Cultural Kathak Academy, and young television actress and stand up comedian Saloni Daino. Founder president of Samraat Club, Margao, ex-CM and MLA Margao Constituency Digamber Kamat will be the chief guest for the event while founder president of Samraat Club Intenrnational Guruprasad Shinkre will be the guest of honour.
