Minister for Solid Waste Management Michael Lobo said that a garbage treatment plant will come up soon at the Verna industrial estate, and added that the plant would solve the garbage problem of Salcete taluka.

Lobo, while interacting with the media persons on the sidelines of a function at Arpora, said that another plant at Verna industrial estate will be coming up very soon and this will resolve the garbage issue of the Salcete taluka.

“At present, Margao, Fatorda and surrounding villages of Salcete are facing the garbage issue. People are burning the garbage that is dumped on the roadside and in fields. Many hotels and colonies have come up and generate huge garbage which needs to be treated, and if this is done, Goa will be garbage-free by 2022. The tender for a plant at Cacora is already floated and it will be ready within 15 months,” he added.

The plant at Cacora will be set up using German technology. Its estimate has been reduced, he added.

He further said that 70 per cent of the trucks bringing garbage to the Saligao plant are closed trucks, and added that segregation of garbage is still not being done and some villages still supply unsegregated garbage to the plant.

“The expansion of the Saligao plant will be done to resolve the garbage issue that is faced as the village panchayats have started door-to-door garbage collection which was not there before the plant came into existence,” he added.

He also said that “an incinerator will be installed to treat the plastic waste that is generated in the state. At present, all the plastic waste goes to the cement factory outside the state. If this incinerator is installed there is no need for Goa to spend money to take plastic waste to cement factory as it will be treated in
the state itself.”
