Panaji: Corps of Signals secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Panjim Footballers in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League match at 3MTR ground, Navelim, on Saturday.
Signals have now defeated Panjim Footballers in both their league fixtures, as earlier in their first encounter the Army men had beaten them 1-0.
The win takes Corps of Signals up to 17 points from 18 matches while Panjim Footballers remain on 23 points from 16 matches.
Panjim Footballers totally dominated the first 45 minutes however they will have themselves to be blamed for Saturday’s results.
Panjim’s Alston Camotio put the North Goa team ahead with a 40-yard strike which gave no chance to the rival keeper. The goal came in the 11th minute.
Once up by the goal, there were series of chances for Panjim. Chandan Gawas did everything right and played a pass to Krishna but the last man failed to score from close.
Llyod Cardozo and Lokesh were the other Panjim Footballers’ players who squandered easy chances in the first session.
Signals who play strong at home, didn’t give up the fight as they attacked in numbers in the second session. They used the flanks for their attack and off the counter attack, Panjim conceded a corner, which was brilliantly nodded in by Romanse MS in the 51st minute.
Signals who were a better side in the second session finally netted through another cross which came from the right flank and this time it was Nim Bhutia who headed in the match-winner for Signals and help earn full three points.
