Porvorim: Openers Sumiran Amonkar and Vaibhav Govekar hit solid knocks of 160 each as Goa posted a mammoth 376 for 2 against Arunachal Pradesh on the opening day of their Ranjji Trophy Plate Group match at GCA Academy ground in Porvorim, on Monday.
The duo stitched a 316-run stand for the opening wicket – the highest by a Goa pair for any wicket.
Arunachal Pradesh won the toss and asked Goa to bat first. Opener Sumiran and his new partner at the other end Vaibhav started the innings with complete caution. But once they got their eye in, they began accelerating the run rate.
Both Sumiran and Vaibhav matched each other stroke for stroke and took care that they kept their wickets intact. In no time the pair reached 50 and then 100. Such was the dominance of the Goa openers that Arunachal Pradesh’s overall bowling attack looked pedestrian. The hapless visitors finally tasted their first success in the 77th over when Vaibhav Govekar was bowled by T Neri after he scored a strokeful 160 for which he faced 210 deliveries and hit 15 fours
and 1 six.
Sumiran, who completed his yet another century this season, find an able partner in Smit Patel and the duo took the total to 352 when Sumiran departed after making 160. His 269-ball knock had 17 hits to the boundary and one over it.
Skipper Amit Verma then joined Smit and the two saw that hosts don’t lose any more wickets. At the close of day’s play, Goa had scored 376 for 2 in 90 overs, maintaining a healthy run rate of 4.17. Smit Patel was batting on 32 and Amit Verma was unbeaten on 14. Smit has so far hit 5 fours in his unbeaten 42-ball knock while Amit hit one six in his 20-ball stay.
