Face masks to counter COVID-19 unveiled

Even as the world is waiting for a vaccine for coronavirus, Livinguard a Swiss company  launched a first- of- its- kind face mask that directly attacks bacteria and viruses of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and renders it inactivate.

“While most masks available in the market are preventive in nature, our face masks are protective and prevent bacteria and viruses from spreading. It benefits both the wearer and others in close proximity,” said Sanjeev Swamy, founder, Livinguard, who has a globally patented the technology on his invention. .

Swamy launched the masks online during a webinar chaired by famous Goan scientist, Dr Raghunath Anant Mashelkar. He explained that, the masks are made from specially treated textiles and works by reducing very high amounts of SARS-CoV-2 particles by more than 99.9 per cent within a few hours. The face masks are already used by corporate customers in the Middle East as well as Singapore, Japan, Germany and China, he disclosed. The product is washable and reusable, and mostly made from cotton. It is eco-friendly, sustainable and can last for six months.

Depending on the type of mask, the cost varies between Rs 1,490 and Rs 1,990 per piece. “This mask significantly diminishes the risk of transferring infection to the user and to other surfaces. It is proven to be non-toxic and safe for use,” said Swamy.  He said that, the ultra premium pricing is on account of the cost of technology.

“Scientifically proven methods are the best way to fight COVID-19,” said Mashelkar.
