Politicians call for strict action over discrimination of couple

Strong reactions had come from BJP and Congress parties over the discrimination meted out to a couple from Vasco at Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital at Bambolim on Saturday.

The Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida in his reaction said, “Such discrimination will not be tolerated in future. The Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Health Minister Vishwajit Rane should initiate necessary action against the doctor who misbehaved with the couple from Vasco at GMC Hospital on Saturday. I have spoken to the Chief Minister and also the Health Minister about the ill-treatment meted out to the residents of Vasco.

The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee vice president Sankalp Amonkar has asked the Chief Minister Sawant and Health Minister Rane to apologise over the issue of discrimination meted to the couple. “It is a very bad experience for the people of Vasco. It was a shameful act of a doctor working at a government run hospital. Other people from Vasco can also experience similar problems when they visit the GMC. The state government is responsible for the act as they failed to enforce a total lockdown in Vasco when it was needed, leading to the spread of the virus all over the state”,
said Amonkar.

The Mormugao municipal council (MMC) chairperson Nandadeep Raut also raised strong concern over the issue and has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. He said that the government should see that other people from Vasco should not face similar problem when they visit the GMC hospital for treatment.

Former chief minister and the Leader of Opposition, Digambar Kamat on Saturday demanded that the state government ensures a sensitive approach especially to patients.  Kamat was reacting to the `shocking incident’ of a Vasco resident who had visited the GMC with his wife for severe back pain and was driven out by a GMC staff.

“Shocked to hear of the ill-treatment meted out to a Vasco couple at GMC Hospital. The government must ensure that a sensitive approach is shown to people and specially patients. I  urge   the Chief Minister and Health Minister  to take note of the incident  and ensure  all are treated  well at the  GMC and other health centres in the state,’’ Kamat  tweeted.
