CM holds meeting to look into Zuarinagar residents’ grievances


Vasco: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, on Thursday, held a high level meeting with the concerned government officials to look into the grievances of the people residing in Zuarinagar containment zone, upon a request made by Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha.

The meeting was convened at Paryatan Bhavan, Panaji and the same was attended by Chief Secretary Parimal Rai; Health Secretary Neela Mohanan; District Collector, South, Ajit Roy; deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao, Sachin Dessai; director general of police, Mukesh Kumar Meena; superintendent of police, South, Pankaj Kumar Singh; deputy superintendent of police, Vasco sub-division, Raju Raut Dessai; Verna PI Mohan Gaude; director of health services Dr Jose D’Sa; health officer at Cortalim Primary Health Centre Dr Succoro Quadros and others.

The Chief Minister discussed various issues pertaining to the Zuarinagar containment zone, which were placed before the high-level-committee by Cortalim MLA Saldanha, wherein the Health Secretary and the District Collector South told that as per the standard operating procedure (SOP), the containment zone order which was issued for Zuarinagar to contain the spread of COVID-19 cannot be lifted at the moment nor the people can be allowed to leave or re-enter as it is against the SOP that governs the containment zone.

“The containment zone tag can be lifted 14 days after all cases test negative,” clarified Roy.

He further maintained that the Zuari Agro Chemicals Ltd (ZACL) is the only industry which after clearance from the Collector’s office has engaged Thyrocare for COVID-19 testing of its workers.

He further said that those workers who have tested positive are housed in the industrial unit’s premises and those who  tested negative are allowed to join work, ensuring employment to the locals, especially, to many residents of Zuarinagar.

As far as the supply of essential grocery items to the people in the containment zone is concerned, the Chief Minister said, “The government is doing its best to reach out to the people during the ongoing pandemic,” and requested the District Collector, South, to ensure that provisions are timely provided every 15 days, and grocery be made available for those who possess ration cards.”

With respect to mass testing for COVID-19, it was told by the Health Secretary and the District Collector, South that Zuarinagar containment zone has a testing centre at Zuarinagar government primary school and those wishing to get themselves tested should go to the centre and get themselves tested for the virus.

Sawant directed police personnel to see that social distancing norm is observed by the people at the containment zone.

He also issued direction to maintain strict law and order in the

containment zone.

Meanwhile, the Cortalim MLA said that the panch member of ward 7 of Sancoale panchayat Satish Padwalkar was with the people in Zuarinagar containment zone between 9 am and 3.30 pm on July 28, and left the venue only after informing the gathering at the barricaded site that the local MLA would meet them the next day along with the deputy collector and sub-divisional magistrate, Mormugao, at 11 am in order to listen to their grievances.
