The government, on Thursday, ordered police enquiry into the video wherein some jail inmates were seen walking at the Central jail, Colvale, which had gone viral on social media last month.
The government has directed the superintendent of police (crime) to conduct a detailed investigation into the matter, and submit the report within 60 days.
“The government is of the view that clear facts on the incident are to be brought out and the responsibility to be fixed on the persons involved for illegalities and the matter needs to be inquired in detail,” states the order issued by the Home Department.
Considering the seriousness of this issue, the government is of the view that an independent enquiry through senior level police officer, who is not associated with the security arrangements of the jail is necessary, reads the order.
It further states that the incident has brought to light a blatant breach of security cordon and lapses on the part of both, the jail officials and the Indian Reserve Battalion force who have been posted for frisking and security purpose.
It may be recalled that last month the prison authority had written to the government requesting to conduct police inquiry into the video, which had gone viral on social media, wherein some jail inmates were seen walking in the Central jail, Colvale.
Owing to the incident, the prison authority had also decided to restrict the use of mobile phones by the jail personnel.
