The jail authorities on Thursday suspended three staffers of the Central Jail, Colvale, for the dereliction of duty vis-à-vis the recent escape of a jail inmate.
Those suspended are: assistant jailor Paresh Gauns Dessai, head guard Anant Gawas and jail guard Ulhas Talekar.
“The three personnel from the Central Jail, Colvale, have been suspended as they were irresponsible while performing duties,” IG (prisons) Gurudas Pilarnekar said.
He said the jail personnel have been cautioned time and again. But despite the strict instructions, it appears that they are irresponsible while performing their duties.
The three jail personnel reportedly, without orders from the higher-ups, had made certain arrangements in shifting the inmate to the mess area.
It appears that this arrangement helped the inmate escape, said jail officials.
The inquiry into the breakout has been on, and it is not yet clear as to how the jailbird escaped from the prison.
This is the second jail breakout within 30 days.
Last month, the undertrial Hemraj Bharadwaj escaped from the prison when the jailbirds had been taken out for garbage collection work at the outer gates of the jail.
A jail guard was suspended for the particular breakout.
On Tuesday, yet another undertrial Ramchandram Yellappa broke out from the central jail.
Flabbergasted by the two breakouts, the jail administration has prepared a report on corrective measures to arrest the escapes.
The jail authorities will suggest to the government corrective measures which include strengthening of the electronic surveillance system (CCTV cameras) in the entire jail premises.
It is learnt that many CCTV cameras in the jail premises have been out of action owing to various reasons, and that the entire jail complex has not been covered by CCTV cameras.
