MARGAO: A brilliant hat-trick by striker Alvito Colaco and a fine brace from Jaison Pereira powered Navelim Sporting’s 5-3 win over Young Strikers of Benaulim in a thrilling encounter of the St Anthony’s UK Cup, at DSYA grounds, near Colva beach on Tuesday.
The win also facilitated Navelim Sporting’s entry into the quarterfinals of the tournament, organised by St Anthony’s SC, Colva.
Navelim Sporting were leading 2-1 at half time with Alvito finding the mark in the very 2nd and 20th minute of play. He then went on to complete his hat-trick in the 56th minute. Jaison Pereira scored the other two goals for Navelim Sporting. For Young Strikers of Benaulim, Xamaro Rodrigues (25’), Elvis Barreto (45’) and Clinton Fernandes (63’) scored a goal each.
It was Avlon Gomes whose assist Alvito utilised by to the fullest as he sent the ball to the far corner of the nets, giving no chance at all to Benaulim keeper Sujitesh Mandrekar to put Navelim Sporting into the lead in the very 2nd minute of play.
Jaison Pereira then sent a cross to Alvito who headed to the far end of Benaulim nets to score his second goal. He then, in the second session, completed his hat-trick scoring from a goalmouth melee.
Navelim’s hard-working striker Jaison Pereira then unleashed a power-packed shot that hit a rival defender and entered the nets.
Xamaro Rodrigues, Benaulim’s promising young striker, was marked heavily and as such could not do much against the strong Navelim defence. He however scored off a penalty kick.
Benaulim’s Elvis Barretto was another player who caught the eyes of the spectators with his dazzling skills and in fact accounted for one goal for his team in the 45th minute.
Benaulim worked hard in the second session and tried to be on level terms but could not meet with much success due to some brilliant goalkeeping by Navelim keeper and also due to excellent work by their defenders, who kept the rival strikers at bay.
