MARGAO: Residents of Sao Jose De Areal on Wednesday met the district collector Anjali Sehrawat on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum opposing the auctioning of quarries of basalt stones by the communidade of Curtorim. The communidade committee of Curtorim has auctioned communidade land of around ninety thousand square meters for stone quarries allegedly to 18 persons.
The residents said, “We demand that the auctioning of communidade land located in Sao Jose de Areal for extracting basalt stones be immediately withdrawn. The communidade of Curtorim has not followed the procedures and grossly violated the conditions laid down earlier. We will be badly affected with such an auction of quarries in our village,’’ they said to the district collector, while handing over the memorandum.
Fidelis Travaso, the president of the Sao Jose De Areal villagers Union said that there are schools and a KRC tunnel in the nearby areas, which will be affected with the stone quarries.
The district collector Sehrawat who heard the villagers said that before giving any license to such type of businesses, the advisory committee will look into the technical aspects and will take cognizance of it. “We will take a decision according to the reports of the technical experts’’ she said.
The villagers also resolved in the last gram sabha not to allow any extraction of basalt stones from the village.
