Former State TT champ Prasad Kirtani passes away
PANAJI: Former State Table Tennis champion Prasad Kirtani passed away on Monday in Mumbai where he had gone to consult some medical specialists. “Prasad played during the time when table tennis used to be one of the most popular sports in Goa and was among the top ranked players in junior and later in senior circuit,” Vero Nunes, president of Goa Table Tennis Association (GTTA) stated in his condolence message issued to the press.
GCA member Sameer Kanekar is no more
PANAJI: Sameer Kanekar, former vice-chairman of Goa Cricket League organised by Goa Cricket Association (GCA), passed away on Monday after a brief illness. A man of few words, Sameer had a smile that could tell it all. “GCA has lost a family member that is going to be difficult to replace. On behalf of my president and all the members of GCA, I extend our condolences to his family,” stated GCA secretary Daya Pagi. Sameer was secretary of Karimabad SC.
Dunes SC march into semis
ANJUNA: Dunes Sports Club made it to the semifinals of the Anjuna Gymkhana Cup 2019 after secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over PVC Parra in the quarterfinal match played at Anjuna Gymkhana ground, here on Monday. The match-winner came in the 26th minute when Dunes SC forward Eljoy made a brilliant footwork and nutmegged Parra keeper in the goal to put his side ahead. At the other end, Parra tried hard to come back in the match as they made numerous raids on the rival but the Bardez side were unlucky as many of their strikes were denied by the crossbar and post, whereas, Dunes keeper came with some breathtaking saves to take them through to the last four.
Navelim Veterans down Cutorim Veterans
BENAULIM: Navelim Veterans registered a 4-2 win via tie-breaker against Curtorim Veterans and entered the quarterfinals of the 19th VM Salgaocar Memorial Veterans Soccer, organised by Prime Sports Club, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim on Monday. After playing out goalless draw in the regulation time, Navelim Veterans proved to be better shooters in the ensuing tie-breaker as Vishant Pednekar, Claudio Dias, Shaikh Abu and Caetano Pereira scored while for Curtorim only Pascoal Fernandes and Ekles Vaz were on target.
Mandar, Swera claim chess titles
VASCO: Mandar Lad of Bardez taluka clinched the all Goa U-19 juniors state chess title after beating Alex Sequeira in the crucial round to score 7 ½ points from possible 8 rounds and remain unbeaten throughout the tournament. Parth Salvi came runner-up while Joy Kakodkar finished third. In girls category, WCM Swera Braganza who was in sole lead till the penultimate round and required just a half point to retain her title, drew against Shweta Sahakari to emerge winner. She scored 5 ½ from 6 rounds and remained unbeaten in the tournament. Shweta Sahakari finished second while Shourya Pednekar came third. Top four players in both the categories will represent Team Goa for Nationals to be held in Jaipur, Rajasthan from November 2 to 10.
Hotshots, Lourdes Basketeers Club are junior basketball champs
PANAJI: Hotshots, Panaji and Lourdes Basketeers Club, Saligao emerged winners in their respective categories at the State Junior Basketball Championship, organised by Panjim Basketeers Club, at Don Bosco Oratory, here on Sunday. In the women’s finals, Hotshots crushed Our Lady of the Rosary High School, Dona Paula 41-7 while in the men’s finals Lourdes Basketball Club overcame Sonics 50-43.
Gidwan D’costa is new chief of Guirdolim Club
GUIRDOLIM: Guirdolim Club elected its new executive committee for the term 2019-22 with Gidwan D’costa as the president, during its Annual General Body Meeting held on Sunday. The other members of the committee are: Brian Pereira (vice president), Jose Dias (secretary), Adney Gonsalves (joint secretary), Chris Crasto (treasurer), Sevaraj D’costa (sports secretary), Shawn D’costa (joint sports secretary, Ana P D’costa (entertainment secretary), Sudesh Bhise (advisor), and members Camilo D’costa, Fabian Simoes, Xavier D’costa and Darwin Cardoso.
