Welcoming the decision of the government to construct a memorial of the former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar, the Goa Suraksha Manch (GSM) on Wednesday stated that the government however should not neglect the memorial of the first chief minister of Goa Bhausaheb alias D B Bandodkar, which is adjacent to the location proposed for construction of the Parrikar memorial.
“The government while constructing the Rs 8.5 crore memorial of Parrikar should also refurbish, expand and beautify the existing memorial of Bandodkar, so that it does not look inferior in any way,” a press release signed by the GSM supremo, Subhash Velingkar stated, further adding that a related plan should be made public by the government.
Velingkar also pointed out that Bandodkar has always been an inspirational figure for Parrikar, during his political tenure, and that Parrikar had expressed it publicly on various occasions. “As the development era in Goa began with the political journey of Bandodkar, it is the duty of the government to revamp the memorial of Bandodkar existing at Miramar,” he added.
The GSM press release further stated that the refurbishing of the memorial of Bandodkar should complement the memorial of Parrikar in terms of its aesthetics and grandeur.
The GSM lamented that the government undertakes the cleanliness of the Bandodkar memorial only on the occasion of birth and death anniversaries of the leader, while locks it up during rest 363 days of the year, thus preventing the people from paying it a visit to pay tributes to Bandodkar.
