UC Benaulim squeeze into semis
MARGAO: United Club of Benaulim squeezed into the semifinals of Telaulim Panchayat Cup by defeating a spirited United Boys of Palolem 6-4 via tie-breaker in an exciting match played at Telaulim grounds, Wednesday. Palolem went into the lead in the 16th minute through Gavin Dias strike but Benaulim managed to restore parity in the dying minutes of the match through Santano Fernandes. In the tie-breaker, UC Benaulim scored accurately through Santano Fernandes, Stalin Baptista, Cleston Fernandes, Graciano Fernandes and Xamaro Rodrigues. Palolem side could find the mark only through Gavin Dias, Jovon Afonso and Alister Mendes.
Mario nets winner as Curtorim Gym reach semis
MARGAO: A 48th minute strike by Mario Mascarenhas helped Curtorim Gymkhana overcome Fr Agnelo Youth Club, Paroda by a solitary goal and enter the semifinals of Sao Jose de Areal Panchayat Cup football tournament, played at Padribhat grounds, Sao Jose de Areal on Wednesday. The all-important goal was scored when Milagres Fernandes ran down the flank and sent a deep cross to Mario Mascarenhas, who darted into the box before sending a stiff grounder to beat the rival keeper.
Deao SC, Chandor Club in 3-3 draw
MARGAO: Deao SC and Chandor Club played out an exciting 3-3 draw in the 3rd division football league match played at Paroda grounds, Wednesday. Both the teams were evenly balanced and though Deao SC dictated terms for most of the time, Chandor side played well to force a draw and split points. While Deao SC scored through Poly Oliveira, Pranoy Fernandes and Sheldon Dias, Chandor came from behind to wipe of the deficit through Joston Martins, Leonel Pereira and Teofilo Dias.
Progress HS trounce Govt HSS Nicobar 5-1
MAPUSA: Progress HS, Sankhali trounced Govt HSS, Nicobar 5-1 in the Subroto Mukherjee Boys U-17 Soccer, at NCW grounds, New Delhi. Jewel scored the first goal for Progress in the very 5th minute and Gelvito Miranda made it 2-0 before the breather. On crossing over, Gelvito Miranda completed his brace to make it 3-0 for Goan school, but soon Nicobar managed to pull a goal through S Emanuel, 3-1. In the closing stages, Progress scored two quick goals through Ashley Cardozo and Anil Chawan. Progress HS now face group leader Army Boys in a must-win game.
9-a-side football at Valpoi
PANAJI: Valpoi Football Club, in association with Felicity Estate Private Limited, will organise Felicity Cup, an all-Goa 9-a-side inter-village football tournament, at Valpoi Municipal Ground from October 26. Winners will get cash prize of Rs 50,000 and trophy, while runners-up will get Rs 30,000 and trophy. Semifinalists will be given Rs 5,000 each besides other prizes will also be given. Teams registered with GFA can participate in the tournament. The first 16 teams that confirm their participation on or before Oct 15 will be allowed to participate. Goan Warriors thrash Cunchelim 9-3
MAPUSA: Goan Warriors FC registered a thrashing 9-3 win over Cunchelim SC in the GFA’s 3rd Division League, played at Tivim grounds, Wednesday. At the breather Goan Warriors were leading 6-1. At Candolim grounds, Nerul SC registered a 2-1 win over Holiday Club Arpora. Sarvesh Dabolkar and Muladar scored for Nerul while Francis Fernandes pulled one for Arpora. At Chapora grounds, PVC Parra managed to hold El-Shaddai Assagao 1-1.
