A tree plantation drive organised by GoGreen under the leadership of Charleston Fernandes along with the village Panchayat and the management of Immaculate Conception High School, Dabal. The aim of the initiative was to encourage people to adopt organic ways of farming.
Addressing the gathering, village sarpanch Alleluia Aphonso highlighted the benefits of organic farming and urged the villagers to adopt fertiliser-free ways of raising fruit bearing plants.
Guest of honour, advocate Faria stressed on the need to increase greenery in the state of Goa by planting saplings and nurturing them.
Sarpanch of Aquem Baixo, Siddesh Bhagat emphasised the need to implement schemes for small farmers. He stated that rampant corruption along with conversion of agricultural land into settlement zones has degraded agriculture.
Native of Paroda, dentist Aquaviva Fernandes encouraged the locals to go green and be self-sufficient by growing fruits and vegetables organically.
During the programme former teacher late Lawrence Fernandes who envisioned a green Goa by growing a farm of fruit bearing trees in the village after his retirement, was remembered. The message of saving mother earth was further emphasised in the cultural programme presented by the students of the school. The plantation drive concluded with the planting a flowering plant in the school compound by the dignitaries. Fruit bearing plants were also distributed to those present.
