Master antioxidant: Glutathione

Deepika Rathod

People are using a product called glutathione which comes in the form of cream, soap, infusion and capsules. It helps improve one’s skin and energy levels and so is it the new fad. Let’s check it out closely.

Glutathione (GSH) which is called the master antioxidant or mother of all antioxidants is basically made of amino acids, glutamic acid, glycine and cysteine. GSH is the main antioxidant in our body and can be found in virtually every cell with the highest concentration in the liver. It is carried in bile from the liver to the intestine from where it is absorbed in the circulatory system further and distributed throughout the body. Under normal conditions GSH is not an essential nutrient for us since it can be synthesised in the body from its component amino acids. But viruses, bacteria, heavy metal toxicity, radiations, certain medications and even the normal process of aging can cause stress and damage healthy cells and deplete GSH. A study found that when the GSH antioxidant system is imbalanced in liver diseases it leads to an increase in oxidative stress.

Benefits of glutathione

 Glutathione helps ward off the impact of oxidative stress that is produced in the body on a day to day basis which in turn keeps one healthy and stress-free.

 Glutathione helps improve protein levels, various enzymes and bilirubin levels in the blood of those who suffer from alcoholic and non-alcoholic chronic fatty liver disease. This suggests that it acts as an antioxidant to cleanse the liver and improve its health.

 It plays important role in weight management and improving insulin resistance.

 Being the master antioxidant, it works to protect cell mitochondria by eliminating free radicals. This means it reduces stress from every cell in the body and helps build one’s immunity.

 It also works on improving nerve functioning which suggests that it helps people suffering with brain or nervous system related disease.

These are few of the benefits of the antioxidant. Foods that improve GSH production naturally in the body are avocado, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, radish, asparagus, garlic and onion. Curcumin and cumin seeds help boost GSH levels. Milk thistle is an excellent source of the antioxidant flavonoid complex silymarin which prevents lipid peroxidation of GSH, and boosts and maintains its levels. The other vitamins and minerals that act as catalysts in the production of GSH are B-complex vitamins, vitamins D, A, E and C, and a few minerals like zinc, selenium, etc.

In conclusion, all that’s trending is not always a fad as glutathione really has several health benefits.

However, never try supplements without any guidance because as suggested our body too is capable of producing it naturally.
