MICHAEL VAZ, MERCES
ON the concluding day of the parliamentary session, the last before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, something unusual came to light. Whereas it has become a routine these days for the opposition leaders to trade baseless charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it was interesting to witness the Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav applauding Modi for taking the nation on the path of progress and expressing hope that he would win the second term and become the prime minister again. It is the true outpouring of heart from the man backstabbed by his own son Akhilesh Yadav, who was in fact raised by his father to be the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Posters have already emerged in Lucknow acclaiming the SP supremo for generously praising Modi. So while the father is all praise for Modi, his son Akhilesh has tied a bond with the BSP leader Mayawati who till recently was the sworn enemy of SP. It was equally interesting to know how the Congress and Left Front attacked Mamata Banerjee on the chit fund scam and the Trinamool Congress leader expressing her annoyance at Sonia Gandhi on the issue. The significant fact to be deciphered from these happenings is the fissures emanating from the anticipated ‘mahagathabandhan’ even before it is stitched. Interestingly, in this midst, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal has further lowered the dignity of political discourse asking people to find someone educated to be the next prime minister, saying that a class XII qualified person does not even know how to affix his signature. It only shows what is boiling within the opposition leaders of our country. Despite the fact that during the current tenure of Modi-led NDA, India has progressed tremendously and carved a niche internationally on various fronts and the economy is poised to surge ahead even competing with China, where there is any question of raking qualifications of politicians. Besides, does the Constitution of India merit educational qualification for the PM’s job? The opposition parties just have a single-point agenda and that is to oust Modi, levelling all sorts of unfounded allegations.
