NEW DELHI: The Centre is likely to appoint soon at least six new Governors, including in Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Goa, after the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh reshuffles his cabinet.
Sources said the Prime Minister and the Congress president, Ms Sonia Gandhi had discussed the issue of appointment of the new Governors during their recent meetings on the reshuffle of Union cabinet and are understood to have shortlisted a few names.
The names of the new Governors are expected to be announced next week after Tuesday’s reshuffle of the Union cabinet.
The Tamil Nadu Governor, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala, Madhya Pradesh Governor, Mr Rameshwar Thakur and the Goa Governor, Dr S S Sidhu have completed their respective terms.
Punjab Governor, Mr Shivraj Patil is holding the additional charge of Rajasthan after the death of Prabha Rau. There is speculation that Uttarakhand Governor, Ms Margaret Alva is likely to be sent to Chennai Raj Bhavan to replace Mr Barnala. Delhi Lieutenant Governor, Mr Tejendra Khanna, who has a few months left to complete his tenure, could be shifted to another state as the Governor.
