PONDA: Former Shiroda MLA Subhash Shirodkar has resigned as chairman of Economic Development Corporation (EDC) citing by-election to the constituency as the reason for quitting office.
By-elections will be held in Mandrem and Shiroda since the sitting Congress MLAs have resigned from the seats and joined BJP.
Interestingly, Shirodkar’s resignation came on Thursday evening, the same day when Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party’s (MGP) central committee officially declared the party’s decision to contest the upcoming by-elections to the two constituencies.
According to sources, Shirodkar is unhappy with MGP contesting the Shiroda bypoll and the BJP’s stand over it. As per sources, BJP top leadership had assured Shirodkar of convincing the MGP not to fight the bypoll. However, the party has failed to do so and considering BJP’s failure to persuade MGP, Shirodkar has resigned from the EDC chairman’s post, said sources. Shirodkar is likely to be the BJP candidate for the Shiroda bypoll.
Confirming about Shirodkar’s resignation, BJP Goa unit president Vinay Tendulkar said that Shirodkar has resigned as EDC chief in order to concentrate on campaigning and work for the upcoming by-election in Shiroda. “BJP wants to win the Shiroda seat at any cost and considering this, we have allowed him to leave the post. It will help Shirodkar to work properly,” Tendulkar said.
When asked whether Shirodkar is upset with the BJP, Tendulkar denied it stating that rumours are being spread. He said that despite resigning from the EDC chairman’s post, Shirodkar has been actively involved in the party work and various meetings of the party.
When questioned why Shirodkar’s resignation was kept a secret, Tendulkar said, “Party did not feel it necessary to inform the public about it. He resigned from the post on Thursday by sending a letter to us and after a discussion on the issue, we accepted it.” he said.
It may be noted that in October last year, Shirodkar had resigned as Congress MLA and joined BJP, necessitating bypoll in Shiroda. Following this, he was appointed as EDC chairman by the BJP-led state government.
Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, coalition partner of BJP, has also decided to fight the Shiroda and Mandrem by-elections in an attempt to upset BJP’s applecart. MGP’s central committee has formally announced the party’s decision to contest the upcoming by-elections. Pandurang ‘Deepak’ Dhavalikar is the party’s candidate for the Shiroda constituency while candidate for the Mandrem seat is yet to be finalised.
Meanwhile, Tendulkar has maintained that BJP has full faith in its alliance partners that they will support BJP candidates in both the constituencies during the by-elections.
