St Anthony’s fight hard to pip DBO Fatorda

A brace of goals by skillful striker Pushparaj Mandrekar enabled St Anthony’s SC, Siolim to register a hard fought 2-1 win against Don Bosco Oratory,Fatorda and enter the  quarterfinals of 46th Chandor Seamen Rolling Trophy Football Tournament played at Chandor grounds on Friday.

Scoring once in each half of play, Pushparaj Mandrekar who bulged the nets in the very 3rd and 53rd minute of play, dazzled all the while and could have scored his hat-trick had his well taken shot was not blocked by the rival defence towards the fag end of the match.

Despite being marked heavily by the Don Bosco Oratory defence, Pushparaj somehow managed to penetrate inside the rival box deceived the defenders to find the mark and was easily the pick of the lot in the match. St Anthony’s SC, Siolim went into the lead in the 3rd minute when Pusparaj sneaked into the rival box to score a great goal when he beat Swizel Pereira under the Don Bosco bar with an angular effort.

Both the team tried to get better of each other with neat passes and positional play and the proceedings were looked upon by the spectators with keen interest.

There were moves and counter moves at both ends and even as Don Bosco tried to get on level terms, their efforts were not enough.

Siolim defence kept a hawk eye on the Don Bosco strikers and managed to lead 1-0 at half time.

The second session saw Don Bosco Oratory doubling their efforts to find the mark and even as Velito Miranda, the speedy Don Bosco strikers fired three good shots, the Siolim keeper Vinit Agarwadekar would not wilt under the bar.

St Anthony’s SC too created several goal scoring chances and after a few shots went wide, Pushparaj completed his brace for the day in the 53rd minute finding the mark to beat rival keeper Swizel under the bar with a neat shot that crashed to the far end of the nets.

Don Bosco Oratory continued to create goal scoring chances and finally pulled a goal back through Valito Miranda whose powerful header in the 58th minute.
