Scoring once in each half, Velsao Sports and Cultural Club registered a convincing 2-0 win against Panjim Footballers to collect full points in the GFA Professional League match played at SAG grounds, Utorda on Thursday.
Velsao Sports and Cultural Club went into the lead in the very 8th minute when a smart build up from the left flank culminated into a goal after playmaker Lalwang Bohham leaped high to connect a cross from defender Bersal Viegas who had overlapped into the rival half with great speed.
After outsmarting a couple of Panjim Footballers defenders, Bersal moved to the top of the rival box and sent an accurate cross to tall and well built striker Lalwang who leaped high in the six yard box and headed the ball to the far end of the nets, giving no chance at all to keeper Sherwin Da Costa.
Panjim Footballers thereafter went into top gear and created several goal bound moves that kept the Velsao defense guessing for most part of the play in the first session of play.
As a matter of fact, Panjim Footballers ripped open the Velsao SCC defence time and again in the opening half, but fell short of finding the mark.
Medio Alston Camotio, Daryl Gama and defender Prasil Kankonkar created ripples in the Velsao defense with neat fast moving passes and a goal looked imminent at any time in favour of Panjim Footballers they went meticulously in search of the equaliser.
Daryl Costa had two clear chances to find the mark but he simply could not tap the ball in when the ball fell to his feet inside the 6 yard box. Similar was the case with Alston Camotio who failed to guide the ball into the rival frame on another occasion – midway through in this half.
Just as the first half was about to end, a Panjim Footballers defender unleashed a powerful 18 yard shot which missed the mark narrowly.
The second session saw Velsao Sports and Cultural Club regrouping well and enjoy possession for better part of the play.
For most part in the second session, Panjim Footballers were on the back foot and were seen defending their fort when Velsao team came charging in.
Panjim Footballers rearguard fell again in the 69th minute of play when the Velsao team buttressed their lead through striker Joseph Pereira who banged the ball in off a cross from Lalwang to score a great goal.
Thereafter, Panjim Footballers came up in patches to threaten the rival goal but met with no success as the Velsao team defended well to keep the Panjim Footballers strikers at bay.
Velsao Sports and Cultural keeper Presley Macarenhas made some smart saves in both the sessions of play.
With this win, Velsao Sports and Cultural Club has moved to the 7th position on the league table displacing Guardian Angel S C from that sport after collecting 17 points, while Panjim Footballers stay on 10th position with 11 points.
