The elections to both zilla panchayats in the state has been postponed to December 20, 2025 by the government, in view of petitions filed in the High Court of Bombay at Goa challenging the reservation of segments.
The ZP polls had been scheduled to be held on December 13. However, the Department of Panchayats and Community Development issued a notification on Tuesday stating that the election to both ZPs has been rescheduled to December 20.
The tenure of the current ZP bodies ends on
January 7, 2026.
The State Election Commission had announced the reservation of seats for women, other backward classes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes after a decision was taken to hold the polls on December 13.
However, petitions have been filed in the High Court challenging the seat reservations. After initial hearing on the matter, the court postponed the hearing to November 25.
The government has assured that it would not issue a notification on the ZP polls before the hearing.
The postponement of the polls has given a breathing period for political parties and aspirants to prepare for the polls.
The ruling BJP is in the process of finalising candidates for the elections, while the Aam Aadmi Party has already
announced 14 nominees.
The Congress has announced that it would fight the elections in alliance with the Goa Forward Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party.
