Goa has witnessed a total of 6,052 cases of cyber frauds till February 28, 2025, with an amount of Rs 149.06 crore reported as stolen by the cyber thieves, the Parliament was told on Wednesday by Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar.
While the lien amount involved is Rs 13.75 crore, the minister stated that the amount refunded, however, is only Rs 9.38 lakh.
The Minister of State for Home Affairs, replying to a related question from Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament from Goa, Sadanand Tanavade, said that till February 28, 2025, a total of 38,22,550 cases of cyber frauds were reported across the country.
These cases involved reportedly stolen amount of Rs 36,448.19 crore, with Rs 4,380.80 crore as the lien amount and Rs 60.51 crore as the refunded amount, the minister said.
Maharashtra witnessed the highest number of such cases numbering 4,27,607 till February 28, 2025, with cyber loot of Rs 5,754.92 crore of which only Rs 9.18 crore was refunded.
The Parliament was informed that to strengthen the mechanism for dealing with cyber fraud, the central government has taken various steps such as setting up the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination has been set up as an attached office to deal with all types of cyber crimes in the country, in a coordinated and comprehensive manner, the House was told.
“The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) has been launched as a part of the I4C, to enable public to report incidents pertaining to all types of cyber crimes, with special focus on cyber crimes against women and children. Cyber crime incidents reported on this portal, their conversion into FIRs and subsequent action thereon are handled by state/ UT law enforcement agencies concerned as per the provisions of the law,” The Union Minister said.
He also stated that the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System under I4C has been launched in 2021 for immediate reporting of financial frauds and to stop siphoning of funds by the fraudsters, and a toll-free helpline number ‘1930’ has been operationalised to get assistance in lodging online cyber complaints.
The House was also told that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology conducts programmes to generate information security awareness, as also books, videos and online material about information security are developed for general users, children and parents, and are disseminated through portals such as www.infosecawareness.in and www.csk.gov.in.
