Cybercrime police’s crackdown targets various illegal activities
Panaji: In a concerted effort to curb online crimes such as cyber fraud, fake resort scams, gambling and prostitution, the cybercrime police have blocked 672 digital platforms and 936 mobile numbers over nine months.
Between October 2024 and July 2025, a total of 672 websites, social media profiles, messaging groups, and online platforms were blocked under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, as per official data released by the superintendent of police (cybercrime).
The month-wise data underscores the growing scope of enforcement. In October 2024, the campaign began with 78 takedown notices, routed through the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C).
The activity slowed slightly in December 2024, with 22 platforms blocked, but surged again in January 2025 with 82 notices.
February 2025 saw 56 additional digital entities blocked, followed by 29 in March.
Interestingly, April 2025 recorded only three takedown actions, the lowest in the period. However, May 2025 marked a significant escalation with 270 blocking notices, the highest in any single month, followed by 84 in June and 48 till mid-July 2025.
The action targets a wide range of illegal digital activity. From fake hotel and resort websites defrauding tourists, to online gambling networks, prostitution rackets, and impersonation scams, the crackdown covers diverse categories of cybercrime. The cybercrime police station has flagged and disabled not only websites, but also deceptive profiles and groups operating across Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and WhatsApp. Along with the content takedowns, the police have also blocked 936 mobile numbers and 134 IMEI numbers.
The SIM cards were linked to fraudulent activities disrupting the communication channels used by cybercriminals.
The police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious digital activity immediately via the cybercrime helpline or online portal.
