As part of safety and security measures, the Goa Police, during a special drive in Chimbel and Santa Cruz, placed nine persons under preventive arrest. Police said that 45 persons were rounded up for verification during the drive, out of which 18 were taken to the police station to verify antecedents.

Police said that the drive was conducted on Sunday night along with combing operations and foot patrolling in Chimbel areas such as Indiranagar, Chimbel quarry, Dhobhi Ghat, and Santaban, as well as in the Santa Cruz area, which has a large migrant population.

A few days ago, the North Goa district police completed verification of 105 scrapyard owners and 221 scrap collectors operating across the district.

Police said that such locations often act as convergence points for the disposal of stolen materials, thereby becoming potential enablers of criminal activity.

The drive was carried out after past investigations revealed the alleged involvement or connivance of scrapyard owners and kabadiwalas. Police added that scrapyards also attract a large number of migrant workers.

Recently, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that migrants have maximum involvement in thefts or illegalities, for which tenant verification is a must. He said that before giving houses or rooms on rent, owners must ensure that tenant verification is done through respective police stations to check antecedents.
