The River Navigation Department is likely to launch two roll on-roll off (Ro-Ro) ferryboats on Ribandar-Chorao route from February 1 onwards.

“We have tentatively finalised February 1 to launch two Ro-Ro ferryboats on the Ribandar-Chorao route,” said a government official.

These ferryboats have ramps on both sides making it easier for vehicles to drive straight on and off.

“Presently, we are operating six ferryboats on this route. Once we introduce Ro-Ro ferryboats, we would be able to use these ferries on any other route,” the official said.

The Ro-Ro ferries will be operational on this route during busy hours from 7 am to 9 pm. At night, the same old ferry boats will ply on the route owing to lesser traffic load.

The Ro-Ro boats will be operated on a build and operate basis for a period of next five years. “These will be more efficient and fast and have a capacity to accommodate nearly 14 four-wheelers,” the official said.
