Sustainable village development in focus

Students from 10 educational institutions presented ideas to improve villages in Goa through sustainable development at the state-level competition, ‘Gram Vikas Manthan: Our Village, Our Plan’. The contest was organised by the Department of Political Science at Government College of Arts, Science & Commerce, Khandola, Marcela.

The students studied villages like Pirna in Bardez, Cudnem in Bicholim, Shiroda in Ponda, and Rivona in Quepem and prepared detailed plans to make these villages better places to live in.

The event was inaugurated by principal professor Purnakala Samant, and the competition was judged by Ashwini Acharya (GIPARD faculty), Gokuldas Kudalkar (panchayat secretary, Tivre-Orgao), Mateus Saldhalna (chairman, St. Estevam Biodiversity Committee), and panchayat members Nandakumar Shet and Vinda Joshi from Cumbharjua.

St. Xavier’s College, Mapusa, emerged as the winners of
the competition.

The event ended with a talk by Kumar Kalanand Mani, a Gandhian activist, on ‘The Idea of Sustainable Village Development in
the Goan Context’.
