Ponda: A major landslide in the Anmod Ghat section of the Ponda–Belagavi Highway near Dudhsagar Temple caused a 30-40 metre stretch of the road to collapse on Friday, disrupting traffic along National Highway 4A.
The landslide occurred around 10 km from the Mollem check post following a heavy downpour.
The South Goa Collector issued an order prohibiting the entry of heavy vehicles on the stretch till September 2, with traffic now diverted via Karwar and Chorla Ghat.
PWD officials said visible cracks had developed on the damaged section a day earlier, causing panic among commuters. Emergency concrete repairs were carried out by the Public Works Department on Thursday but proved ineffective, with the road collapsing by Friday night.
Engineers from the National Highways division of the PWD visited the site and assessed the damage. They said the protective structures built in the area are over 40 years old and have weakened due to continued heavy rainfall.
Concrete barricades have been placed to block one side of the road, and emergency teams have been deployed to carry out assessment and repairs. Police are monitoring vehicle movement, allowing only light vehicles and passenger buses to pass near the damaged section.
