Phal Dessai says move will curb land scams

Margao : Minister for Archives and Archaeology Subhash Phal Dessai said that around 10 per cent of the work of digitising Goa’s archaeological documents has been completed and estimated it would take another three to four years to finish the project. Once completed, the digitised documents will also help protect people’s lands, he said.

“The old archives and documents which is our treasure have to be preserved and protected so that our future generations have access to it. We have started the process of digitisation and it may take us another three to four years to complete the work,” said Phal Dessai, speaking at the Chieftains Uprising Commemoration Day in Cuncolim.

He said that around 10 per cent of the work has been completed in one year.

“This will enable us to ensure there is no manipulation being done in the old documents and this will help people protect their lands as well,” said Phal Dessai, adding that people while referring to these documents would often tear the pages and then put them back after changing names.

“This led to the land scams. We are working towards making the documents available in the digitised form so that people have easy accessibility. Without physically touching the documents, people can have access to these documents.”

The minister said the department was working with Goa University and had signed an MoU with the History Department.

‘Efforts on to include Cuncolim revolt history in Class 9’

MARGAO: Minister for Archives and Archaeology Subhash Phal Dessai said that while the history of the Cuncolim revolt had been introduced in Class 10 textbooks, efforts are under way to introduce it in Class 9 as well.  He said the government was also working on an animation series that would feature an episode on the Cuncolim revolt.

Opposition Leader and Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao said work on revamping the Chieftains Memorial was progressing.

“It was a long-time demand and along with the Chieftains Memorial Trust, we took up a proposal for the revamp of the area in remembrance of the 16 chieftains. The tender of nearly Rs 1.5 crore by PWD has been issued and by the next year’s function there will be 16 statues of the chieftains at this location,” Alemao said.
