The Goa Livelihoods Forum (GLF) joined hands with ARA, a collective led by Asha Arondekar, Rahila Khan and Asha Vernekar, to celebrate National Handloom Day at the Heritage Bistro, Campal. The event honoured India’s weavers and showcased the richness of indigenous textiles.

In her address, Arondekar spoke on the threat fast fashion poses to the industry, urging innovative designs and the use of handloom fabrics in clothing and accessories beyond the traditional saree.

Rahila Khan highlighted the skill and effort involved in weaving, while Vernekar showcased handlooms from across India. She stressed that the benefits of such initiatives should reach every corner of the country. Chief Guest and Goan fashion designer Verma D’mello spoke about her work in promoting the Kunbi fabric both in Goa and internationally.

The celebration featured a Kunbi stall and a handloom walk where participants shared stories behind their outfits. The event ended with a call to preserve textile heritage and support weaver livelihoods.
